Improved Skin Begins With Your Next Meal

Guest post

Shoppers today are bombarded by a wide range of anti-aging products for the body and face, whether or not they’re simple cosmetics or surgical procedures. But the fountain of youth really simply comes from higher nutrition, one health knowledgeable says.

A survey by the Yank Academy of Dermatology found that ninety four percent of women are confused by all the out there anti-aging treatments (over-the counter and prescription) similarly as the procedures offered in a very doctor’s office.

Yet per Cherie Calbom, author of “The Wrinkle Cleanse,” you can look younger beginning with your next meal. Her book outlines a four-step approach to getting softer, younger-looking skin, explaining{that a} diet rich in raw foods, vegetable juices, whole grains and lean protein will cleanse the body of poisons and defend it from the causes of wrinkles and other symptoms of aging.

You Are What You Eat – How Much Does Food Matter?

I am sure you have heard the sayings “Let food be your Medicine” and “You are what you eat” Let Food be your Medicine was attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates considered to be the Father of natural medicine. He strongly believed that any ailment was related to poor nutrition and bad eating habits. Henry Lindlahr, the naturopathic doctor who cured himself of diabetes and obesity with diet published “You Are What You Eat: How to Win and Keep Health with Diet” in 1942.

Now, two nutritionist, James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch are asking whatever happened to the belief that food is your medicine? The latest research shows that food is much more than calories, carbohydrate, protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other phytochemicals. Food contains information molecules essential for your cells to function properly. These information molecules are destroyed by modern food processing.

Your diet has a huge impact on your health

A lot of research into food and illness shows that the food we eat has a great effect on our health and wellbeing. Food does matter, so how is it that we have come so far away from this concept? This is the central question that James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch ask in their riveting documentary Food Matters. This fascinating documentary brings together the thoughts and opinions of some of the world’s leaders in nutrition and natural healing. Watch the Trailer below.

No money in health

Andrew Saul, one natural health pioneer, points out that the answer seems to be that there is no money in wellness, only in ill health. ‘Good health makes a lot of sense but not a lot of dollars’. Drug research takes precedent over nutritional research.

Undestanding The Triggers Of Food Cravings

If you are looking for a no frills solution to how to stop craving food – I’d have to say just stop eating too much but is this really it?. I have heard and used this line a number of times before, while watching some of my friends eat, at home, at parties. I would like to spend some time and write about salicylate intolerance food cravings in not so many words.

Let start by saying that eating a lot does not automatically lead to cravings for food or gaining of weight, instead it is the choice of food you allow yourself to eat. Cravings for food are increased when eating some certain types of foods i.e. some type of food stimulates and increases them and eating healthy or some other foods may help you develop the ability to stop them.

5 Better Eating Tips For Your New Year Resolution

Healthy Eating Choices

Healthy Eating Choices

I was surprised to see three times as many people in the Gym last week even before the New Year had begun. Every year there is a big influx of new members at the beginning of the year all with their New Year resolutions for better eating,  to get more exercise and get fit or maybe lose some weight. Sadly the gym is back to the usual numbers by the end of February.

We all know that New Years resolutions seem to fail miserably after a few weeks. According to a study by psychologists nine out of ten resolutions are doomed to failure. Tips for sticking to your New Year Resolution include having more than a vague plan. For example,  instead of saying you will start to eat more healthily, break it down into positive ways of achieving that. Take small realistic steps. Don’t try to give up all your bad eating or drinking habits at once.

Many people resolve to start a Detox Diet in the New Year after all that eating and drinking over the holidays. While it’s certainly a good idea to give your liver a rest from alcohol and your digestive system from rich and hard to digest  foods I don’t recommend doing any strenuous detoxing with cold juices and salads in the midst of winter. If you live where it’s warm then go right ahead. I prefer to wait until Spring time considered by many detox experts to be the key time for detox.

Here are 5 simple better eating tips that can improve your diet and your health in 2010

Healthy Eating Tips for Christmas Dinner

Xmasdinner1The foods that are traditionally eaten for the Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day vary so much around the world but Turkey is eaten in a good number of countries. Turkey itself is quite healthy but it’s all the other high fat and high sugar things that are included in the feast that ruin it. Here are some healthy eating tips for Christmas dinner.

  • Start the day with a good breakfast. You will be less likely to want to nibble unhealthy snacks to keep you going. Try oatmeal porridge, muesli with yogurt, or whole grain toast with poached egg if it is cold where you live. If it’s warm then a fruit smoothie with live yogurt , a bowl of fruit or muesli with fruit would be good.
  • If you need a snack to keep you going until the Christmas meal have a couple of clementines or satsumas , a few dates, figs or a handful of walnuts. Raw vegetable sticks with hummus or guacamole dips would be good too.

How To Eat Your Favorite Foods And Still Lose Weight With A Green Smoothie Detox

Green SmoothieIf you are struggling to lose weight and hate counting calories then the Alternate Day Diet with Green Smoothies could be the answer. Even if you do not need to lose weight you can get a tremendous energy boost and have incredible health improvements with this type of eating plan that includes a green smoothie detox on alternate days.

Scientists have known for the past 75 years that restricting calories in animals could make them live healthily for up to 40% longer than normal. They know that a very low calorie diet can keep arteries clear, give better blood sugar control, improve inflammation which is an underlying factor
in many diseases, keep brain cells sharp and prevent diseases associated with aging.

Lose more weight on the Alternate Day Diet

Well that sounds great but at what price? Very few people have the will power to stick to a tedious regime of very low calorie eating where you are feel hungry all the time.  But more recent research on animals showed that they still got all the health benefits if they restricted calories only on alternate days. In fact, you can lose more weight on the alternate day diet than on a conventional weight loss diet.

This way of losing weight does not slow your metabolism down like other calorie restricted diets. The alternate day diet can be followed indefinitely. Many people find that when they come off it they can maintain their weight without any problems if they eat healthily.  If you find though that your weight starts to creep up again just go back on the Alternate Day Diet  until you have lost the weight again.

Say NO to Toxic Trans Fats if you want to Detox

FriedChickenSAre confused about good fats and bad fats? Did you know that some fats make you fat and others can make you slim?  Some fats give you energy and others zap it. Some fats improve the way every cell in your body functions while others interfere with their vital functions. Two fats, Omega 3 and Omega 6,  are essential for your health but trans fats or hydrogenated fats interfere with your detox system and cause many health problems..

What are trans fats & hydrogenated fats?

Trans fats were mainly an invention of the food manufacturers. In order to harden and increase the shelf life of good oils so they can be used in margarines, spreads, baked good, and other dishes, they subject them to a process known as hydrogenation.

This results in twisted molecules known as trans fatty acids. Although you can get a very small amount of natural trans fats from beef and dairy foods it is the artificial trans fats that are bad for you. They are worse than the saturated fats that they replaced.

According to food scientist Prof Tony Blake newer technology has allowed margarine  manufacturers to produce products that do not contain trans fats. but I am not convinced that the quality of the oil they use in the process is healthy to start with.

How To Stick To Your Detox Diet

unhealthySWe all have good intentions when we start any sort of a diet but it can very  hard to stay on a detox diet or stick to a healthy diet afterwards when there are all sorts of temptations in the way.

It can be very hard if you get hungry and the rest of the family are eating all your favorite foods or perhaps you are at work and your colleagues offer you a donut.  It’s so very easy to slip back to old habits when you finish the detox as life takes over.

Karen Knowler, a raw food coach has some great tips.  Although it is aimed at people who are eating or wanting to eat a raw food diet it can apply to anyone who is doing any sort of detox diet.

Here are her tips:

It can be really quite amazing: when we first start paying more attention to what we eat and really think about it properly, inevitably we will start to become increasingly aware of old patterns and habits around our eating habits that also aren’t serving us and begin to question those too.

It’s not uncommon for us to realize, for example, that previously we would eat:

a) When we’re not hungry
b) Because someone offered us something and we didn’t want to say no
c) Because we were taught always to clean our plate
d) Because we were bored, tired, stressed, depressed, feeling stuck or wanted some kind of stimulation or numbing to occur

As the purer foods start to come in, all of these things and many more besides come up for the assessing, and it’s here that the journey to food freedom really begins.

Because when we start becoming more aware about not just what we eat, but how, when, why, where and even with whom, that’s when a whole can of worms can be opened up. And this is where the new chapter starts and everything that has gone before – everything that has never really served us – comes fully onto our radar, and we then have the choice as to whether
we “keep, replace or modify” that particular behavior or habit around food.
