Post Thanksgiving Detox Plan

post Thanksgiving DetoxEven if you’ve told yourself you won’t overeat at Thanksgiving the chances are that you will. In fact, in spite of all good intentions, the festivities may go on all weekend so it’s good to have a post thanksgiving detox plan lined up.

The foods traditionally eaten at Thanksgiving are loaded with salt, fat and refined sugars, and alcohol, which is why you’ll likely feel fatigued and bloated and maybe guilty afterwards.

There’s no point in beating yourself over what is done. One day or even a couple days of overindulgence will not set you back too far. But, the holiday season has just begun and it’s easy to fall into that downward spiral of unhealthy eating but you have the power to get back on track with your healthy eating plan.

Taking healthy steps to get you back on track with these Post Thanksgiving detox tips is the best thing you can do for your body. This detox plan is free of gluten, dairy products, refined carbohydrates, sugar and sugar substitutes, carbonated drinks, caffeine (except green tea) and of course alcohol. Don’t worry its not a starvation diet.

Post Thanksgiving Detox Tips:

1. Get moving

Have a glass of pure water when you get up in the morning then do some dry skin brushing. Brush your body all over starting at your toes and always brushing towards your heart to stimulate the circulation then hop in the shower for some hydrotherapy.

Alternating hot and cold water can stimulte the circulation even more. Start with hottish water for 1-2 minutes followed by 30 – 60 seconds of cold water. Repeat this several times.

Go for a brisk walk later in the day too if you can manage it.

2. Rehydrate

Healthy fluids are key as extra salt, sugar and alcohol dehydrate your body. Make a jug of detox water and drink it throughout the day.

Start the day with a Green Detox Smoothie

1 c coconut water
2 c baby organic spinach or romaine lettuce
1/2 ripe avocado, sliced
1 stalk organic celery, chopped
1 c fresh or frozen peaches, sliced or chopped
1 c fresh or frozen mango, sliced
2 tbsp ground flax seed
1 scoop protein powder if you have some handy. (optional)

Put all into your blender and blend until very smooth.

Coconut water is packed with natural electrolytes that your body needs, especially when you have been drinking alcohol. The fat in the avocado combined with the protein powder will help to stop sugar cravings that can ocurr after eating a meal loaded with refined flour and sugar. Flax seed will help keep your digestive system moving.

Herbal teas such as peppermint, ginger or chamomile are great for settling the stomach and combating bloating. Green tea is good too.

3. Cut the carbs

If you ate a lot of carbs over Thanksgiving stick with eggs, vegetables and healthy fats, like avocado or coconut oil for breakfast.

If you can’t face that try some vegetable soup or a plate of steamed vegetables or whizz up another green smoothie.

Despite what others say there is no harm in giving your digestive system a rest if you can’t face any more food.

4. Load up on veggies

Vegetables are rich in minerals and fiber, which helps fill you up and keeps your digestive system moving. Make yourself a big vegetable salad for lunch. Try a salad recipe from here. Top with some left over turkey, organic skinless chicken, or beans with a little olive oil and apple cider vinegar dressing. Apple cider vinegar is good for the digestion and can help reduce bloating.

Try steamed veg for dinner with some plain grilled, deep sea, low mercury fish or organic chicken. Or go for a vegetarian meal of Quinoa with beans and vegetables. Want some more ideas?  Try some from this 2 Day Detox Diet.

Eat fruit as a snack between meals if you feel the need for something sweet but eat it with a handful plain nuts like almonds. Another idea is to spread apple or pear slices with some almond butter.

6. Relax

If you’ve been doing the entertaining or have had a hectic festive few days then you may be in need of some “me time”.  Take time to relax. Maybe take an Epsom Salt or Moor Mud bath.
