If you want to avoid festive food ruining your<strong> detox<\/strong> here are some easy, tasty, healthy recipes for the holiday season to keep you on track.<\/p>\n<p>The following recipe was printed in the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Mixed Seed Porridge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/foodanddrink\/9703691\/Mixed-seed-porridge-a-la-Faviken-recipe.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Daily Telegraph<\/span><\/a><\/span> a few weeks ago but would make a great breakfast on Christmas morning. Full of slow releasing whole grains it will keep you going all morning. The original recipe calls for sugar but you could use maple syrup or Xylitol to make it healthier.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mixed Seed Porridge<\/strong> from Chef Stevie Parle<\/p>\n<p>Serves 2<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>150g\/ 5oz barley, soaked in filtered water overnight<br \/>\n150g\/ 5 oz rolled oats, soaked in filtered water overnight<br \/>\n250ml 8.5 oz organic milk or substitute<br \/>\n1 cinnamon stick<br \/>\n5 cardamom pods<br \/>\n1 tbsp maple syrup, honey or xylitol or stevia to taste<br \/>\n2 tsp flax seeds to serve<br \/>\n2 tsp sunflower seeds to serve<br \/>\n2 tsp pumpkin seeds to serve<br \/>\n2 tsp sesame seeds to serve<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Directions<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Drain barley &amp; oats and place in deep saucepan<br \/>\nAdd milk with a splash of water, the cinnamon stick and cardamom pods<br \/>\nBring to boil and simmer fro 5 &#8211; 10 minutes until barley is tender<br \/>\nAdd a little more water if it starts to stick<br \/>\nTake off heat and stir in maple syrup, honey, stevia or xylitol<\/p>\n<p>Put into 2 serving bowls and top with 1 tsp of each seed.<\/p>\n<p>The following 2 recipes were adapted from recipes in Tesco&#8217;s Supermarket Magazine<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indian Spiced Carrot Salad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serves 4<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>4 carrots coarsely grated<br \/>\n30g\/1\u00bd oz raisins<br \/>\n2 tsp cumin seeds<br \/>\n1 tbsp sesame seeds<br \/>\n3 tbsp hazelnut oil or olive oil<br \/>\n1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar<br \/>\nLemon juice to taste<br \/>\n50g\/2oz almonds, roughly chopped<br \/>\nsmall handful parsley or fresh cilantro (coriander) chopped<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Directions<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Put raisins in a small bowl.<br \/>\nCover with water that has just been boiled and allow to soak for 20 minutes until plumped<br \/>\nDry fry seeds carefully in a frying pan for 1 &#8211; 2 minutes to release the aroma. Do not allow to brown.<br \/>\nLeave to cool slightly and then add to a large serving bowl with grated carrots.<br \/>\nMix apple cider vinegar and oil together and add lemon juice to taste.<br \/>\nAdd to carrots &amp; raisins with remaining ingredients and toss well to combine.<br \/>\nSeason to taste with a little Celtic or Himalayan salt and black pepper.<br \/>\nCover and leave at room temperature for 30 minutes to allow flavors to mingle before serving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waldorf Salad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serves 8<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salad ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 sticks celery sliced on the diagonal<br \/>\n2 apples, cored and sliced<br \/>\n200 g ( 7oz) red grapes halved<br \/>\n100g (1\u00bd oz walnut halves<br \/>\n1 x 270g packs chicory leaves separated<br \/>\n2 x 70g arugula leaves (rocket)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dressing<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>150g (5oz) natural yogurt<br \/>\n3 tbsp fresh lemon juice<br \/>\n1\u00bd tbsp Dijon mustard<br \/>\nCeltic salt &amp; fresh ground black pepper to taste<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Directions<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mix dressing ingredients together and season to taste.<br \/>\nToss all salad ingredients together in salad bowl and drizzle over a little dressing<br \/>\nServe rest of dressing separately<\/p>\n<p>Beets are good for the liver and <a title=\"How A Liver Detox Diet Can Restore Your Health\" href=\"https:\/\/thedetoxspecialist.com\/blog\/?p=195\" target=\"_blank\">liver detox<\/a>. Here&#8217;s an unusual recipe for them from <a title=\"Silver Fern Farms\" href=\"http:\/\/www.silverfernfarms.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Silver Fern Farms<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/a>The original recipe called for sugar but I have substituted maple syrup to make it healthier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beetroot Confit\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3537\" title=\"Beets\" alt=\"Liver Detox Diet\" src=\"https:\/\/thedetoxspecialist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Beets.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serves 3 -4 with meat or turkey<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>2 medium (200g) beets (beetroot)<br \/>\n2 bay leaves<br \/>\nA sprig of mint<br \/>\n2 Tbsp olive oil<br \/>\n2 Tbsp red wine vinegar<br \/>\n1 Tbsp maple syrup or xylitol<br \/>\n\u00bd tsp five-spice powder<br \/>\nSea salt and freshly ground black pepper<br \/>\n125ml (\u00bd cup) water<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Directions<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Peel and grate the beetroot and place in a saucepan with bay leaves, mint, olive oi,l red wine vinegar, maple syrup, five-spice powder, sea salt, pepper and water. Cover and simmer gently until the liquids have evaporated (about 10 minutes). Lift out bay leaves and mint. Beetroot Confit keeps for 2-3 days in the fridge and reheats well.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an unusual recipe from\u00a0 raw Brussels Sprout salad that I saw in the Daily Mail from <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/lifeandstyle\/2010\/nov\/13\/brussels-sprouts-recipes-fearnley-whittingstall\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Raw Brussels Sprout Salad<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serves 1 -2<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chose the freshest, smallest sprouts you can for this tasty winter salad.<\/p>\n<p>50g hazelnuts, preferably skin on<br \/>\n150g Brussels sprouts, trimmed, discolored outer leaves removed<br \/>\nZest of 1 lemon<br \/>\nJuice of \u00bd lemon<br \/>\n1 tsp fresh thyme leaves<br \/>\nGood pinch of chilli flakes<br \/>\n1-2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil<br \/>\n80g young, fresh goat&#8217;s cheese ( optional)<br \/>\nSea salt and freshly ground black pepper<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Directions<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Heat the oven to 180C\/350F\/gas mark 4. Scatter the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and roast in the oven until fragrant and browned \u2013 about 9 &#8211; 11 minutes. Remove from the oven, wrap in a clean tea towel and leave for a minute. Rub vigorously in the tea towel \u2013 this will remove the browned skins.<\/p>\n<p>Cut the prepared Brussels sprouts from top to root into slices about the thickness of a 50p piece.<br \/>\nPut\u00a0 into a bowl and toss with the lemon zest and juice, thyme leaves, chilli flakes, and a tablespoon of oil.<br \/>\nSeason with salt and pepper.<br \/>\nTaste and add more olive oil, lemon juice and\/or chilli flakes as desired.<\/p>\n<p>Arrange on a plate, scatter the hazelnuts over and around and crumble on the goat&#8217;s cheese if wanted. Trickle over a little more olive oil and serve immediately.<\/p>\n<p>If raw Brussels sprouts aren&#8217;t up your street then try this cooked recipe.
