Summer is the ideal time to do a fruit and vegetable detox. There are so many luscious fruit and vegetables about you are really spoilt for choice. It makes it so easy to follow a detox diet plan.
Detox is like house cleaning. You probably have a regular routine of house cleaning that includes dusting mopping and vacuuming. But, a couple of times a year you give it a more thorough clean getting into all the nooks and crannies.
Your body is not much different. It needs regular, thorough cleaning to function efficiently. You are constantly being bombarded with toxins from food, water, personal care products and the environment in which you live.
Researchers have discovered that these toxins get into your body where they accumulate causing damage to your cells and tissues which ultimately results in chronic health problems.
Do you lack detox nutrients?
Some people are better than others at getting rid of them. A lot depends on how your detox system works. People who don’t eat a lot of fruit and vegetables lack the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients that are needed for the detox system to work efficiently.
By following a fruit and vegetable detox twice a year or more you can help your body eliminate these toxins. Vegetables and fruit are simply power packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that help the liver detox pathways work.
It’s no coincidence that they also help prevent heart disease, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, arthritis, asthma, macular degeneration and many other degenerative diseases.
Avoid hard to digest food
A fruit and veg detox should exclude meat and hard to digest food. When you give your digestive system a rest your body can put more energy into cellular cleansing.
Eating fats, protein and starch puts a lot of strain on the digestive system. Have you ever eaten a large meal of bread, steak, baked potato with sour cream and a dessert and felt sleepy afterwards? That was because it sat in your stomach for hours and a lot of energy went into digesting it.
Basic fruit & vegetable detox diet plan
Here are the foods to avoid:
- Processed & refined foods
- Fast food such as burgers, pizza, fries, fried food, tacos
- Meat with preservatives such as sausages and deli meats
- Fatty meat & skin
- Deep fried food
- Processed vegetable oils ( most salad dressings) and hydrogenated oils
- Simple sugars including honey and food containing it.
- Wheat products such as bread, bagels, crackers, pasta, regular cereals
- Colas and other carbonated drinks
- Chocolate
- Alcohol
- Coffee
Decrease these foods:
- Meat – eat free range skinless chicken, turkey. Avoid BBQ and blackened food
- Dairy products – stick to bio-yohurt or kefir
- Fish unless very low mercury
Eat plenty of these foods:
- Fruit – preferably organic
- Vegetables – preferably organic
- Beans & lentils
- Whole grains like rice, millet, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat
- Very fresh raw nuts & seeds
- Cold pressed Olive oil, flax seed oil, hemp seed oil
Drink:
- Filtered water
- Green Tea and herbal teas
- Fresh vegetable and fruit juices
- Green Smoothies
If you find it hard to get in your 9 portions a day adding fresh juices or green smoothies to your diet is an ideal way to get them in.
When you juice vegetables and fruit the juice is separated from the fiber and it is quickly absorbed by your body. You flood your body with vital nutrients it needs to push the toxins out of your cells.
When you blend fruit and vegetables in a high powered blender to make a smoothie the plant cell walls are broken down releasing all the nutrients so they can be absorbed easily too.
Some people find that juicing suits them better than drinking smoothies but both have their uses. I wrote a post about the controversy over juicing versus blending here:
Is Blending Fruit and Vegetables Better Than Juicing For Detox

Wow! There’s a ton of good stuff in this post. Thanks for sharing!
One thing I’ve found that helps when I’m doing a detox is peppermint tea. The menthol in the tea really calms my stomach down and also acts as an appetite suppressor.
Green tea is also good (as you mentioned) but I find that it can be a bit harder on my stomach.
Thanks again for the article!
Sandy Halliday
Hi Paul,
Tea does stimulate gastric acid and if you have a very sensitive stomach or over production of gastric acid already then it could feel a little hard on your stomach. Moderate consumption of green tea is unlikely to cause problems for the majority of people.
Menthol in peppermint tea seems to relax the smooth muscle in the intestines. That’s why people with IBS find it helps.

Hey Sandy,
You got some useful detox information in this article. I have also learned that adding garlic to your diet aids the liver in producing detoxification enzymes that help filter toxic residues. I usually add garlic to a lot of my meals; I know it can leave a taste in your mouth at times but it definitely enhances the meals and helps aid any detox diet.

Hi Mary,
You are right. Garlic is good for so many things. It is anti-viral, anti- bacterial, anti-fungal and helps to lower cholesterol. It contains sulfur which the liver uses in the sulfation detox pathway to detox normal body chemicals like hormones.
Some people find that they can get rid of the taste and smell on your breath of garlic by chewing fresh parsley or mint.

I really wanted to buy some juicer so I could make and prepare some fresh fruit or vegetable juice. And I guess one of my target vegetable juice is malunggay juice mix with pineapple juice. I heard a lot of good comments on that.
Sandy Halliday
Hi Morgan,
Malunggay juice, aka Moringa, is best made in a blender. You take the washed leaves and blend with water. People usually mix it with other juice such as pineapple to make it taste better. It has a smell that is off putting to some. Leaving it to stand for an hour can help.
It has a lot of health benefits.
