If you’re looking for a tasty and healthy breakfast option for your detox diet, then green smoothies have to fit the bill. They make the perfect portable breakfast too.
Even if you are not detoxing they are a great way to reboot your body when you’ve overdone the eating and drinking or fallen off the healthy eating wagon.
Are you eating enough fruit and veg?
They are also an easy way to get in the 8 servings of fruit and veg a day. 8 servings? Yes, according to a US study women who ate eight servings of fruit and veg a day as young adults had 40% less plaque in their arteries 20 years later than those who ate only four. But, you need to be eating them in a ratio of six veg to two fruit.
Another study confirmed that eating just five portions of fruit and veg a day is associated with a lower risk of death from any cause.
Scientists have warned that the majority of people worldwide are not eating enough fruit and veg and are consequently chronically deficient in antioxidants – one of the root causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.
It’s known that inflammation is the underlying condition in heart disease, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, bowel diseases, fibromyalgia, eczema and psoriasis and many others.
So you see it’s vital to eat enough fresh fruit and veg to get your antioxidants and prevent inflammation and disease.

Green Smoothies are so versatile
The beauty of these healthy smoothies is that they are so incredibly versatile. You could, with a bit of thought and planning, have a different smoothie every day of the year. I guess though that most of us stick to a handful of recipes that we like and make those during the week.
Having a few go-to favorites allows you to buy and prep the ingredients ahead of time, making it even easier to blend up your favorite breakfast drink in the morning. That’s the key to making breakfast smoothies work when you’re short on time.
When you’ve got your favorite smoothie ingredients simply wash, peel and chop the fruit and veggies as needed. Add them to non-toxic storage bags or containers in portions that are right for your smoothies and store them in the fridge or freezer.
In the morning, just grab a container, tip the contents into your blender along with anything else your smoothie needs like pure water, coconut water, nut milk, kefir or juice etc. and blend away. Pour your smoothie into your serving glass or travel container to take to work, rinse out your blender and your breakfast is done. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
If you are taking your detox smoothie to the office make sure it stays cold if you aren’t able to drink it while you travel. Adding frozen fruit or ice to your smoothie will help to keep it cool.
Make smoothies for the whole family
If you have the time you can use your main blender to mix up a batch of smoothies for the whole family, or get a personal blender for each member of your family so they can whip up their own favorite smoothie.
These small personal blenders make ideal Christmas presents. My granddaughter got one for Christmas and loves it. Just make sure they don’t use all fruit or they will be hungry in no time. It’s best to add some healthy protein powder and nut butter for the fat, to keep them fuller for longer.
One of the reasons I love a green smoothie for breakfast is because they help me start my day off right with a boost of nutrition. It’s much easier to ensure you get at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies each day when a big chunk of it is in your breakfast smoothie.
Plus these smoothies are made with real, unprocessed foods. That alone is a big improvement from the usual breakfast choice of sugary cereal, toast, muffins or pancakes doused in syrup.

Green Smoothies give you a nutritional boost
The vitamins and natural sugars from the fruits and veggies give you the boost you need first thing in the morning and it’s easy to add some protein and some healthy fat to your smoothies by using almond butter, kefir, coconut yogurt and flax or chia seeds for example. This will give you a filling breakfast drink that should keep you going until lunch time.
Don’t forget that green smoothies are basically made up of 40% or less fruit and 60% green leaves. If you hate greens then you just have to try green smoothies. You will be surprised that you don’t taste the green leaves. Honestly!
Here are a couple of delicious, healthy breakfast smoothie recipes to get you started.
Blue Velvet Breakfast Detox Smoothie
1 cup organic blueberries
2 organic plums, stoned
1 organic banana

Tropical Power Detox Diet Smoothie
3/4 cup fresh or frozen mango chunks
2/3 cup fresh or frozen pineapple chunks
1 cup organic, young kale, central stems removed and chopped
1½ cups unsweetened coconut milk
1/2 scoop (18 g) vanilla pea protein powder
Put all ingredients into your blender and whizz up until very smooth.
The difference between green smoothies that are filling and ones that leave you hungry soon after you drink them is that the filling ones contain more protein and fat.
If you are one of the many people who lead a busy life then these green smoothies make an ideal quick and easy but healthy breakfast whether you are following a detox diet or not.
