Colon Detox with Vitamin C Flush
This bowel or colon detox flush is attributed to Dr Linus Pauling, the American scientist and educator, who advocated large doses of Vitamin C for health and took 10 grams every day himself. It has also been called an Immune Booster Flush because it flushes the lymph system, an important part of your immune system. The bowel contains many areas of lymph tissue that become clogged with toxins. The Vitamin C colon detox can help flush them out as well as cleansing the bowel.
It’s easy to forget the importance of the lymph system and we don’t pay enough attention to keeping it healthy. According to Dr. James Balch, physician and nutrition consultant, a Vitamin C colon detox flush is useful for the treatment of flu, bacterial infections, cancer, AIDS, and chemical allergies.
Humans, monkeys, and guinea pig are the only mammals who cannot make Vitamin C. It is an essential nutrient that we have to get from our food or risk dying of scurvy. It is an important antioxidant that helps to counteract free radicals and plays a part in healthy gums, skin, vision and connective tissue. It has been used to detoxify lead.
Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid. Some people find this form too acidic and irritating to the gastro-intestinal tract so prefer to use forms that are buffered with mineral salts such as calcium ascorbate or sodium ascorbate. Ascorbic acid is reputed to have the best effect.
Here’s how to do the Colon Detox Vitamin C flush.
- Start the flush in the morning before you eat.
- Mix 1 teaspoon ascorbic acid powder (sometimes called crystals) or other non acidic Vitamin C powder in half a glass of pure water and drink or sip slowly. Repeat every 15 minutes until your system “flushes”. You will release large amounts of fluid through the bowels. It can take from 2 – 4 hours.
This flush provides maximum absorption of Vitamin C and brings poisons from the blood and lymph out through the lining of the intestines. It can help in the case of food allergy reaction as it flushes out food particles to which the person may be reacting as well as infectious organisms and their toxins.
The point at which the flush occurs is the point of maximum absorption. To calculate how much you need on a daily basis you multiply the number of teaspoons you took by 0.75.
For example: if you took 8 teaspoons – 8 x 0.75 = 6 teaspoons a day. It is best to take this in divided doses as 2 teaspoons three times a day. You can take this for several months to saturate your tissues with it.
If your stools become watery you can reduce the dose but you are likely to be surprised by how much Vitamin C you need. You can do the colon detox flush up to 4 times a year and the amount of Vitamin C needed to cause the flush should reduce.

I’ve had 10 teaspoons and no result – is that normal . started at 8am no food before – 11am still not eating but still no action .WHY?
Maybe you are very deficient in Vitamin C. How much Vitamin C was in 1 teaspoonful?
Different brands vary. I have known people to need more than 10 grams.
Did you get a result in the end?
Sandy
Michelle,
Yes, that is normal. You need to keep taking the teaspoons of vit. c until you have diarrhea.
I just did it and needed 15 teaspoons.
Should you expect other detox symptoms like headaches etc?
Hi Greg,
This type of flush is less likely to produce other detox symptoms although it is possible. Everyone is different.

If you do this flush, you should immediately stop taking this much vitamin c once you get a result as you run the risk of getting kidney stones.
Stephen Lawson of the Linus Pauling Institiute says this:
“The concern about the role of vitamin C in kidney stone formation, a source of speculation for several decades, appears to be no longer justified.”
I listened to an interview recently that Jeff Bland, the nutritional biochemist and researcher did with Linus Pauling some years ago in which Pauling said he took 13 grams of Vitamin C a day. There may be a few people who could be troubled with kidney stones through large doses of Vitamin C but they are rare.

Can a person take large doses of vitamin C ascorbate daily without causing the same effect on the bowels that repeated use of laxatives does? Can it cause a person to become dependent on increasingly larger doses in order to have a bowel movement?
My partner has rheumatoid arthritis and was told by her doctor not to take more than the RDA of vitamin C as it was erosive to her bones and people with degenerative diseases shouldn’t take high doses. Is this true? Her face did get red and blotchy also from taking it.
Hi Faye, I think it depends on how much you call large doses. You take it to the level of bowel tolerance and then cut back a little so you do not get loose stools. It should not cause any adverse effect at this level. Most laxatives are irritants. Linus Pauling took at least 10 grams a day for many years and found no adverse effects. If you end up taking it regularly to relieve constipation then you could become dependent on it if you don’t find and correct the underlying cause of it.
Good health
