So many hot weather, refreshing drinks are full of sugar which you don’t want if you are following a detox program, just finished one, or are following a healthy eating and drinking plan and value your health.
You’ve exhausted all the iced green tea and detox water recipes and you don’t want to drink alcoholic drinks so what can you drink to cool down when the weather’s hot?
Redemption Bar, a vegan, wheat free and refined sugar free gastro bar in London, England, has come up with some healthy, non alcoholic drinks that inspired these recipes.
Most call for refreshing coconut water as the base. Coconut water, not to be confused with coconut milk, is the clear liquid found inside young green coconuts. It has a hint of sweetness but having a glycemic value of only 3 the natural sugar it contains will not spike your blood sugar.

Although some brands claim it is more hydrating than water, according to an experiment on the UK TV program, Superfoods there is no difference between the two. Coconut water does however contain a range of beneficial minerals which makes it equally effective for rehydration as many sports drinks.

Here are the recipes:
Coco-Lime Refresher
Makes 1 drink
150 ml unsweetened organic coconut water
30 ml organic lime juice
10 ml organic orange juice
10 ml agave
slice of an organic lime
A few ice cubes made with pure water
Add all ingredients to a shaker or glass jar with a tight fitting lid with a few ice cubes and shake up for 20 seconds. Strain into an attractive serving glass. You can get a bit fancy with this and salt the rim first if you like. Garnish with a slice of lime.
Citrus fruits contain several different antioxidants that may help prevent a range of health conditions from heart disease and stroke to skin cancer.
Coco-Beet Refresher
Makes 1 drink
200 ml unsweetened organic coconut water
10 ml organic beet juice
10 ml organic orange juice
dash of organic lime juice to taste
A few pure water ice cubes
Add all ingredients to a shaker of glass jar with tight fitting lid and a few ice cubes. Shake up vigorously for 20 seconds and strain into your serving glass. Garnish with a slice of raw beet.
Beets are good for cleansing the liver and improving muscle function.
Strawberry Delight
Makes 1 drink
4 large organic strawberries
1 strawberry for garnish
1 inch organic cucumber
25 ml organic apple juice
25 ml organic lime juice
150 ml unsweetened organic coconut water
10 ml aloe vera juice
5 mint leaves
A few pure water ice cubes
Whizz up the strawberries, cucumber and juices in a blender. Transfer to a shaker or glass jar with tight fitting lid with rest of ingredients and shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Strain the drink into a serving glass and garnish with a strawberry and black pepper.
Strawberries are high in Vitamin C and antioxidants ranking them amongst the top 10 fruits and vegetables in antioxidant capacity.
Redemption Royal
Makes 1 drink
Seeds and pulp from 1 passion fruit
25ml passion fruit puree
25 ml pomegranate juice
25 ml organic lime juice
150 ml good quality, naturally sparkling mineral water
Place the passion fruit seeds and pulp in a glass with the puree. Add the pomegranate juice and lime juice and top up with the mineral water. Stir well to mix.
Passion fruit contain piceatannol which, according to a published study by Purdue University, delays the formation of fat cells and prevents them from becoming mature.
Green Thirst Quencher
Makes 1 drink
150 ml unsweetened organic coconut water
25 ml aloe vera juice
25 ml organic lime juice
1/4 organic iceburg lettuce
1/4 organic cucumber
1 tsp grated fresh ginger
1/8 tsp of sea salt
1/8 tsp of wasabi paste
1/8 tsp of freshly ground black pepper to garnish
1 slice cucumber for garnish
Put all ingredients except pepper into a blender and whizz up until very smooth. Put a few ice cubes into a serving glass and strain mixture into it. Sprinkle top of drink with black pepper and garnish glass with a slice of cucumber.
These healthy refreshing drinks are a perfect alternative to bottled juices and sodas which are loaded with sugar and toxic additives that only increase your weight. They are ideal for drinking during a detox program if everyone around you is drinking alcoholic drinks. Which one will you try first?
