So you’ve decided to go on a detox diet. I’m all for them as you know if you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time or if you are one of my subscribers.
Detoxing from time to time helps win the war against toxins building up in your body and damaging your cells and tissues. Toxicity is one of the main underlying causes of disease.
A good detox diet helps provide the nutrients that the detox system needs to function efficiently. Detox pulled me out of chronic fatigue. I know it works.
Here are my 10 top tips to help you make the best of your detox diet.
1. Make a Plan
Remember failing to plan is planning to fail! Really think hard about what resonates with you. Think about what you can easily do or do without too much effort. Don’t go for a hard core detox if you’ve never done one before. Start a detox at a weekend or at a time when you don’t have any or many social commitments.
Start with a detox diet that appeals to you. They are varying degrees of detoxing depending on how much time you have to devote to it and how deep you want to cleanse.
2. Start A Vision Board
Make a physical or digital vision board to keep reminding yourself why you are doing this detox. You could even create a Pinterest board and keep it private. Pin pictures of yourself now on it and find some of how you would like to be – healthier, more energetic or thinner perhaps. Look at it often to keep yourself on track.
3. Resolve To Eat Only Food From The Earth
Make a resolution to avoid processed foods. They have been stripped of many nutrients that are needed for good health. Think fresh and healthy and eat only foods that are grown from the earth.
4. Clear Out Your Fridge and Kitchen Cupboards
Have a good clear out of your fridge and cupboards. Get rid of temptations like candy and cookies and other unhealthy foods and snacks. Give your fridge a thorough clean with a non toxic cleaner and fill with fresh fruit, vegetables and salad ingredients required for your chosen detox diet.
5. Book A Treatment
Make an appointment to have a massage, reflexology treatment or acupuncture to help get those toxins out of your body and make you feel good. If you can’t afford a professional treatment then maybe you could get a friend to give you a back massage. It’s not too difficult and you can find some instruction videos online.
6. Buy Window Sill Herbs
Buy yourself some pots of fresh herbs and put them on your window sill. Chop plenty of them and put them on vegetable dishes and salads to give them flavor. People often complain that detox food is bland but it doesn’t have to be if you use plenty of flavorful herbs and spices.
7. Go For A Walk
Go for a 20 minute brisk walk every day while you are doing the detox to help get the circulation moving. Don’t walk near traffic. You will breathe in the toxic pollution which gets into your body and can damage your lungs and blood vessels. Make walking a habit at least three times a week whether you are actively detoxing or not. It is good for your general health.
8. Don’t Sit At A Desk All Day
If you work at a computer don’t forget to get up every hour and walk about a little and stretch your body.
When not at work consider doing a digital detox for a day or a weekend. Decide to keep your computer or smart phone or cell phone switched off for a whole day.
9. Eat Mindfully
Use your best china and glasses for your meals and drinks. Sit down at a table to eat and take your time. Digestion starts in the mouth so remember to chew your food well. Enjoy the ritual of eating slowly and mindfully appreciating the taste and texture of the food. Remember you are eating to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to help your detox system work efficiently and improve your health.
10. Plan A Relaxing Ritual
Plan to have a relaxing ritual before bed so you get a good night’s sleep. Avoid staying up late to watch TV. Although it’s not good to exercise vigorously before going to bed doing some yoga stretches at night can help you wind down after a busy day.
Have a relaxing bath with some essential oils or an Epsom salt bath and go to bed early. Read a few pages of a good book or listen to some calming music to help you drift off to sleep.
