Toxins come from various sources and just listing them would require a book. They are all around us – in the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, the soil we grow organic food in, even some kind of medical treatments (eg vaccines, chemotherapy) are highly toxic. Not to mention the toxic news we see in media every day.
Fortunately, there are also ways of protecting yourself. In the West, detox is a relatively new phenomenon, while in India, Ayurveda has for more than 2000 years been promoting natural ways of self-cleansing.
While there are many detox methods, some complicating and expensive and others relatively simple and affordable, for detox to work, it needs to cover your whole being – the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of it.
These are a few suggestions how to start ridding yourself of toxins you may have accumulated over the years:
-
Environmental toxins
These come mainly from manufacturing and cars, as well as cigarette smoke, and are not easy to avoid. However, you can avoid a lot of the toxins inside and around your home. Stop using household cleaners containing bleach, ammonia and other toxic chemicals, or use them sparingly. Better still, find out about the old-fashioned ways of keeping your home clean.
-
Food toxins
The worst thing about the Western diet is that it’s convenient, tasty and cheap. And because it’s refined, hybridized and processed, over 70% of people who eat this diet are either heavily overweight or have serious health problems many of which are linked to toxins and additives. If you lack the time (or will) to prepare healthy meals, then at least include as much fresh fruit and vegetable in your diet as you can.
-
Water toxins
While water is crucial for detox, and you should drink 8 glasses a day, remember that tap water is teeming with toxins and that even bottled waters are not much better – plus the toxins that leach from the plastic bottles themselves. Solution is to install water filters or buy good quality bottled water.
-
Toxic people
We all know people who, somehow, always make us feel uncomfortable – small, worthless, inferior. As avoiding such people is not always possible, try to reduce the time you spend around them. People who are constantly complaining and seeking attention, or who never miss the opportunity to put you down, indirectly, through their negative attitude“steal” your energy and “poison” the atmosphere, as well as everyone who happens to be in their vicinity. Rather, surround yourself with people who make you feel appreciated and whose company boosts your energy levels.
-
Toxic locations
We’ve all been to places where we almost immediately felt good. We also know of places which we can’t wait to get out of.
Noise, pollution and crowds is what usually makes us tense and uneasy. There are places which, although seemingly vibrant, can also deplete you of energy through over-stimulation of senses: modern shopping malls, airport buildings, restaurants, night clubs, and other busy, noisy places through which huge numbers of people circulate and where toxic energy easily collects and lingers.
-
Toxic lifestyle
Lifestyle is the one thing we can’t blame others for. We all know that junk food, lack of exercise, insufficient rest at night, long working hours and addictive behavior are bad for us, but many of us are just too lazy, or too exhausted, to do anything about it.
The economic downturn and rapidly changing world create additional stress and often bring chaos to our lives. This affects both our health and our relationships. Combined with unhealthy living habits and information overload, it’s a perfect recipe for a toxic lifestyle.
-
Toxic emotions
It’s well-known that anger, hatred and rage are toxic and self-destructive emotions. They are physically damaging because they put your heart at risk and weaken your immune system.
However, being around angry people can be just as bad, because they usually try to find someone to vent their anger on. Avoid such people like a plague because it may take you hours to restore your inner peace once you get away from them.
Prolonged exposure to toxins, regardless of the form these toxins take, will result in your body eventually becoming unable to get rid of them, so will start storing them.
Toxins are real. They can suck your physical and emotional energy and bring chaos into your life. Don’t wait for this to happen. Find out about the best way to detox and do it without delay.
