Why is a Fruit Detox So Good For You News Roundup
I can’t remember a time when the benefits of fruit have been so much in the news. Recent research helps to explain why a fruit detox is so good for you. Here’s a news roundup of some of the benefits.
Fruit detox juice blend
Very recently it was reported that French scientists had come up with the healthiest and best tasting blend of fruit juices that cut the risk of heart disease and stroke.
They analyzed blends of 13 different fruit purees and juices for their effects on pig arteries and a recipe of 7 fruits were chosen by the volunteers. As well as relaxing the arteries allowing a good flow of blood to the heart the fruits contained polyphenol antioxidants that mop up harmful free radicals that can damage your cells.
The final 200 ml of juice was made from 30 grapes, 15 blueberries, 9 strawberries, half and apple, 5 lingonberries, 8 acerola berries and 5 chokeberries. Don’t worry if you can’t find the superfruits lingonberry, which is related to the cranberry, acerola, a red cherry-like fruit and chokeberry, an American blackberry, the others will make a healthy fruit detox juice or better still, a fruit smoothie.
Kiwi fruit – your disease fighters
According to researchers at Teikyo University, Tokyo, Kiwis are one of the best fruits you can eat to help prevent disease. Once again their benefits are due to the high levels of antioxidants they contain beating oranges, grapefruit, mandarins, and apples in their levels of polyphenols.
The gold kiwi fruit contained higher levels of antioxidants that the green ones and may prevent diseases such as hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), heart failure, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s Disease.
Tangerines may prevent obesity
Researchers from The University of Western Ontario found that the flavanoid, nobeletine, in tangerines could provide protection against heart attacks, diabetes and stroke, as well as preventing obesity.
In spite of being fed a typical Western diet high in fat and sugar a group of mice given concentrated nobiletin did not gain excess weight, get a fatty liver, or have elevated blood fat or blood sugar.
The group which were not fed the nobiletin became obese and showed all the signs of metabolic syndrome – high cholesterol and triglycerides, high blood levels of insulin and glucose, and a fatty liver.
The scientists noticed that when nobiletin was directly applied to human liver cells, the cells secreted less ‘bad’ fats.
The flavanoid has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions to lower cholesterol levels and some studies indicate that it may improve impaired memory loss and treat acne.
Blueberries slash fat cells
Researchers found that blueberries, already considered to be a superfood, can break down existing fat cells and prevent new ones forming.
Although the studies that were done on mice showed that fats could be reduced by 73% with the highest dose and 27 % with the lowest does the researchers said that they still need to test the dose on humans.
The potential is there for blueberries to help reduce fat tissue from forming.
Blueberries contain high levels of antioxidants that help prevent heart disease , Type 2 diabetes, asthma, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and other age related diseases.
Tomatoes
We tend to think of tomatoes as a vegetable but they are really a fruit.
Researchers reviewed the current research on tomatoes. They said that eating more tomatoes reduced the risk of conditions such as macular degeneration, cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, cognitive dysfunction and skin damage caused by ultra violet light.
Tomatoes contain high levels of lycopene, an antioxidant that becomes more available after cooking. Tomatoes also contain substances that have anti-inflammatory and anti-clotting properties.
Eat a wide range of fruit to get all the benefits
This is just a review of the very latest research but there is a wealth of research on the health benefits of fruit and vegetables. It is clear that to get all the health benefits you need to eat a wide range of fruit and vegetables every day.
