Hair dyeing is a trend that has existed for a very long time now. In fact, females counting at least 70% in America color their hair on a regular basis. Though the purposes may vary.
Why do people dye their hair?
- It’s a fashion statement
Hair coloring has become a real form of expression. The likes of Kylie Jenner or Miley Cyrus who change their hair color on a regular basis has created a trend to make their hair compliment their outfits. As a fashion statement, colors aren’t limited to browns, blacks or blondes; we’re seeing more and more people trying out greens, magentas and silvers.
- To hide graying hair
Gray hair is not just indicative of old age. Even at a younger age, if you have genetics that makes you grow gray hair, there’s really nothing you can do about it except to dye it.
- Enhance your natural hair color
Some women think that their natural hair colors might seem a bit dull, and dye gives their hair the lift they desire. These could be in the form of highlights or ombres which has also gained popularity.
2 Types Of Hair Dye
The two types of hair dyes are organic hair dye and chemical hair dye. Both have advantages and disadvantages when you use them.
Organic Hair Dye
Having natural ingredients to color your hair, organic hair dye is the safest way to color one’s hair. Natural or organic hair dye is known to have a coloring effect that’s natural and different for each person.
It is also known to protect the outermost layer of the hair called the cuticles, which results to having shinier, more bodied and volumized hair. More than this, the coloring aspect of organic hair dye adapts and unites with the hair creating the most natural finish.
Chemical Hair Dye
On the other hand, chemical or regular hair dyes usually treats the hair similar to paint being applied on a surface. It attaches itself to the cuticle or protective layer of the hair and prohibits it from functioning as it should.
This would result to gradual damaging of the hair as it stops moisture from developing. It dries out the hair strands which eventually causes split ends. Here are some of the chemicals in regular hair dyes that can cause more than hair damage:

Ammonia
Ammonia is the agent in chemical hair dyes that opens up the cuticles of the hair in order to ‘paint’ your hair. As it damages this layer, it will result to dry hair.
Not only that, it has several negative effects on a person’s health. One of the main reasons why this is prohibited for pregnant women is because of the damage it can cause on the respiratory system. It’s also known to be an irritant for the eyes, nose and skin.
Peroxide
Peroxide basically erases your current hair color in order to coat it with a new one easily. It has the same damaging effects as ammonia as it can also be dangerous to the lungs, skin, nose and eyes. Additionally, you could get hair loss because of peroxide.
p-Phenylenediamine
PPD is the coloring aspect in hair dyes. Darker-colored hair dyes are known to have more PPD’s in them. Despite it being an effective agent to hair coloring, it is one of the most dangerous ingredients.
PPD comes with a variety of health-related dangers if you breathe it or touches your skin. At 6% ratio, it can cause allergic reactions. It is also a carcinogen and studies have found that it can cause lupus.
