A question I got asked by a subscriber recently was how to get motivated to go on a detox diet. She wanted to do a detox to lose some weight but just couldn’t get herself motivated to start. Is that your problem too?
The New Year is just around the corner and if you have not been able to get motivated before then the New Year is one of the best times to work up that enthusiasm. It’s that time when hoards of people decide they should eat healthier, lose weight, do some more exercise or change bad habits.
It’s one thing wanting to do these things but quite another getting that fire in your belly to put it into practice. So let’s take a look at how to get motivated to start that detox diet.
1. Get inspired
If you want to achieve anything in this world, then you need to find the inspiration to do it. At this time of the year popular magazines and the internet are full of amazing stories with before and after pictures of people who have transformed themselves from being overweight, unhealthy, with no energy to slim, toned, healthy and vibrant versions of their former selves.
Reading stories and tips of people who have made it will surely get you motivated. If they can do it then so can you!
2. Set your goal for detoxing
You’ve probably heard and read a lot about setting goals. Although it’s important to set them and make them realistic, you don’t want to have too many. One of the reasons many people can’t get motivated is because they try to do too many things at a time. If you want to follow a detox program just work on that goal before going on to any others. What could be more important than your health?
One way is to sit down on your own and go through the reasons you want to lose weight or believe you may be suffering from toxicity. Look at your health problems and pick out what you want to change. Project your mind forward 2 months from now and pretend the change has been made. See yourself, in your mind’s eye, how you want to be. Feel how it would be for you.
Write out or print your goals in big words and stick them where you can see every day. You can post them next to your bed, on your kitchen wall or even on your refrigerator. This will remind you of what you’re aiming for. Make them realistic.
Your goal can be visual as well as written. Make a physical vision board or create one on the internet. There are some free sites that let you make them. Pinterest is a good place to create them too. You can keep it private. Looking at the photos that portray your goal is way better than just using your imagination.
3. Get rid of negative thoughts
Your thoughts are extremely powerful. If you focus on the negatives, it will be much harder for you to work up any enthusiasm to start. Think of all the benefits the detox diet has to offer.
Imagine yourself looking healthy and enjoying life. Your vision board will help here as well. If you focus on only the positive side of the diet, then you will definitely enjoy and succeed. So, each time you feel unable to start. Thank about what you will gain at the end.
4. Get support
Find friends or a group with a similar goal. Strive together, help and support each other. Team spirit helps everyone goes further.
Studies of individuals involved in attempts to lose weight have shown that those who go it alone are not nearly as effective in reaching their goals as those who join forces with others to establish their common objective.
Some studies have shown that the average weight loss achieved by those who had peer pressure to help them keep on track was TWICE the amount lost by people working alone.
There are a number of online groups that you can join if you don’t have a group of friends with the same goal. One such group is the No Excuses Body Makeover Membership.
Not only will you get a plan for exercising and eating healthy that does NOT require you to make big sacrifices to get somewhere but you will get an amazing seiries of motivational emails to keep you on target for 6 whole months!
5. Take baby steps
A big part of lack of motivation is sheer dread and overwhealm. The best way to tackle it is to break your goal down into tiny baby steps.
Break your detox diet plan down into small enough pieces that you understand everything that needs to be done to complete it or get to the next step. You don’t have to go cold turkey with it and do everything at once. In fact, its always best to gradually cut out bad foods and replace them with healthier versions. Starting can be as simple as working towards it by reducing your coffee intake, getting a water filter, increasing your vegetable intake, or finding some non-toxic personal care products.
People who lack motivation often just lack the energy to get started. This is very often due to blood sugar fluctuations or crashes so starting by getting sugar out of your diet will be the thing to do. Many people have lost weight just by avoiding sugar. Here’s how to do a sugar detox.
With detox you have a tool for changing your life. A detox diet can help you lose that weight, fight disease, strengthen your body cell by cell restoring its ability to heal itself.
Once you have worked your way through these tips on how to get motivated just take action. Even a tiny one will help you begin to build momentum. That momentum will only grow and soon taking action will become an easy habit. You will no longer sit on good ideas and let them die.
Do you have any other tips that have helped you when you needed to motivate yourself?

I’ve read so many books that said to cut everything out at once and just go for it. Refreshing to read your advice to reduce gradually. Thanks, I know a little more about detox now.

Hi Shan, Yes, it’s so tempting to want to go for it. I can understand people wanting to do that but I am a great believer in treating your body gently. It certainly avoids the dreaded so called side effects which are rarely detox symptoms but simply withdrawal symptoms.
Good health.

Hey Sandy,
What great tips. I’ve worked with people on detoxes before and they go in blindly and get overwhelmed. I’m such a firm believer in taking baby steps. Change is difficult for most people and going in pedal to the medal doesn’t work for everyone. And usually doesn’t last with long term results.
The other thing I’m passionate about is having support. Most people need accountability, support, motivation and a good kick in the butt when needed. 🙂 Thanks so much for the awesome tips.
Have a great week. Lisa

You are right about change Lisa. I remember going to a nutritionist years ago before I trained in nutrition myself and I found it impossible to do what she suggested. At that stage I had never even cooked brown rice! It took some getting used to the new foods too but I did it in the end. Baby steps are the name of the game. I had the motivation because I was so fatigued I could hardly drag myself out of bed but I could have done with more support.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
Good health
