It’s been reported that TV mogul Simon Cowell was forced to go on a holistic detox after suffering a nervous breakdown earlier this year. In spite of his widely publicized attempts at staying healthy with a 5 week green smoothie detox, daily green smoothies, fist fulls of supplements and IV vitamins he failed to give up smoking or alter his chronically stressed lifestyle.
Many celebrities go on a detox diet but fail to realize that a true detox must be holistic. A holistic detox should encompass the mind and spirit as well as the body.
Holistic Detox brings long term benefits
Sometimes, you may experience symptoms like fatigue, general weakness and malaise and not being able to sleep well. This is because a build up of toxins has compromised your immune system and affected the efficiency of your metabolism. Going on a detox diet may help in the short term but a holistic detox is needed if you want to reap the long term benefits.
In a holistic detox plan, as well as avoiding certain foods, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, you must make time to relax, reduce stress and clear your mind of toxic thoughts. This can be done through relaxation exercises, massage, meditation or even counseling.
Meditation
If this sounds difficult, it’s not. Meditation can be as simple as focusing on your breathing for 10 to 15 minutes a day. This helps to clear your mind, release stress and in the process, relax your body. When your body is relaxed the blood and lymph flow better delivering the toxins to your liver to be safely eliminated.
Massage
Through the sense of smell massage with aromatherapy oils can cause the release of brain chemicals that make you feel relaxed and calm. Relaxing the muscles and stimulating the lymph and blood flow encourages the drainage of toxins from the tissues.
Digital Detox
A holistic detox may also include a digital detox. It’s a good opportunity to disconnect yourself from the electronic world and plug back into the natural one. It was reported that Simon Cowell had to cut himself off from family, fiends and work colleagues while he took time out to recover.
Affirmations
You may also have to change your thinking. Simon Cowell, for example, is unable to give up smoking because in his mind he equates it to having a good time. It’s madness for people to expect they can counteract the bad effects of stress or smoking for example by simply eating a healthy diet. It is better than eating a bad one though!
